We all love a good hashtag. A good hashtag can expose your content to an expansive audience on some platforms by turning topics and phrases into clickable links in posts on your profile or page. When people click a hashtag or search for a hashtag, they’ll see results that contain the hashtag so they can learn more about topics that interest them. However, this does not necessarily mean increased traffic for your page and can often come across as “spammy” and unprofessional. So, why don’t hashtags work on Facebook?

Here is the breakdown:

  • On Facebook, people can only find you through hashtags if they are actively searching that exact hashtag. That means that your hashtags have to be specific to what people are already searching for. They should be trending but not trending enough to get lost in millions of similar posts. See how that can get tricky?
  • While other platforms, such as Instagram, have heavy hashtag search action, the majority of facebook users are not searching hashtags, they are simply scrolling and reading. How many times have you searched a hashtag on Facebook? It isn’t usually how that platform is used, therefore isn’t the most effective way to gain exposure.
  • The best way to boost your facebook page is to increase interaction with other users. Posting material that is relevant and interesting will lead to more likes, comments, and, perhaps most importantly, more shares.  This kind of interaction is the best way to gain engagement and reach the most people.
